Challenge #6

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

One. I would love to attempt a podfic for a story of mine and/or someone else.
Two. I would love to collaborate with an author for a sequel of a story we wrote together.
Three. I would love to have some new icons of J2, wincest, C2 (Chris Kane/Chad Michael Murray)
Four. I would love some new manips for some of my stories
Five. I would love any recs for A/B/O fics, infantilism fics, an enemy to lovers, pretend boyfriends for the SPN fandom, Royal Pains fandom, and Harry Potter fandom
Six. I would love to read any recs for science fiction / fantasy books
Seven. I would love to have recs on fandoms to check out and give them a try
Eight. I would love recs for Christian Kane/Chad Michael Murray stories
Nine. I would love if Sam and Dean had a chick flick moment before the show ends
Ten. I would love for Dean to accept the love he receives even though it’s not what he expects
Eleven. I wish that characters were not pushed to be in romantic relationships when it’s clear there is only friendship
Twelve. I would love to have a co-mod for my community
Thirteen. I would love to make some new friends
Fourteen. I would love to write more, complete drafts, and post
Fifteen. I would love to come out of my comfort zone and try something brand new

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

When I first became a member of LiveJournal, I mostly blog about what was going on in my life and taking silly little quizzes. I was reading the Harry Potter series at the time and found myself looking into communities about Harry Potter. I emerged myself into the world of fanfiction and the Harry Potter fandom as a reader.

Sadly, I took a break from the site and was not using it as often and returned after a few years. I realized the authors I liked and read for Harry Potter were now writing about the tv show Supernatural. I loved the show from the get-go and started reading all the stories in the SPN fandom. For a long while, I just read the wonderful stories and started making friends by commenting on their stories. A friend of mine encouraged me to give creative writing a try and see what happens. I did and I have improved over time, but I still have a lot to learn. I’m grateful to all the betas I’ve used to help my stories get better and I’m sorry that it took until now for me to even understand what you were saying each and every time. My goal will always be to improve my writing skills and to always post no matter what. To write what you know and what makes you happy. I’m hoping to give some new things a try. I’ve gone to conventions and met other fans of the show and even meet a handful of friends from LJ at some conventions along the way. These friendships have helped show me who I am without ever knowing I needed it in my life. Thank you!!!

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself!

Hello. I’m yonkyu and my name is after a rank in Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu karate. I’ve been training for twenty years and I’m a sixth-degree black belt. I compete in two karate tournament circuits throughout the year and compete in three different events: weapons, kata, and sparring. I enjoy spending time with friends and family and love to travel and see different things. I’m an early childhood educator for the past eighteen years and I love their smiling faces and hugs.

I am part of the SPN, Harry Potter, Royal Pains fandom and love reading stories. I am a writer as well and doing my best to improve my writing skills by practicing more often than complaining about the lack of skills. It’s like everything else, it takes time to develop and lots of practice.

By the way, please call me, Erin!!! It’s nice to meet all of you!!

I'm excited to see what the new year has in store for this year's challenge!!!!

Day 15 - Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it.

I wanted to participate in the Snowflake challenge because I’ve seen it before on LJ and dreamwidth, but I was never able to participate before. When I saw it was happening again, I had to participate in the challenge. And I wanted to get myself out there and meet new people. And it’s a struggle for me to meet new people. I’ve wanted to go back to each post and share my post saying that I completed the challenge, but I get scared and anxious over it. And what I got out of this challenge was sharing a piece of myself with others in fandom and outside of fandom. And it felt great to accomplish a challenge that I set up to do, I have one day left to complete and I will be officially done. It was nice to accomplish a goal I set up for myself and completed!!!

Day 14 - In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom.

Sadly, I think fandom will start to fade out slowly and not be the center of attention. And I know I will most likely be yelled at for it, but I’ve already noticed a decline as it is. And I think the ship wars could increase and the “hate” will continue to spread making writers and artists no longer feel comfortable in their fandom and will move on and leave fandom altogether. I don’t understand why we can’t get along and accept everyone's tastes are different and it’s quite ok that others like certain ships and you don’t. I wish there was more collaboration in fandom as well and the willingness to give credit to those that help others out, like beta readers, alpha readers, artist betas, etc. I just hope that fandom stays for a long time and start to see the beauty in our differences. I want the hate and disgust to go away and learn to be friendly no matter your interest and shipping. So I hope fandom stays and gets stronger in the future and more accepting, but I feel the interest and love of fandoms will decline due to all the hate and disrespectful comments that float around fandom.

Day 11 - In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

This is a hard one to answer. I’m still figuring it out myself. When I get an idea for a fic, I tend to write it down or open a new document on the computer. Then I just start to write and I let the characters guide me as much as I can and they allow.

I struggle with motivation and completing something. I attempt challenges but then I end up stepping away and dropping them due to assigned word count. Once I get the word count in my head I start to panic and begin to fluff the story up with information that does not need to be in the story at all or it’s not even important to the main storyline. I am well aware of the plot line I want to share but it’s all inside my head.

I’ve started to write down notes and make some sort of outline to stay focused on the main story I want to share. I’m working on just writing and getting the story completely before I edit my way through the story and then finish it. I’m hoping to my more outlines and guides for myself for my future fics to help me stay on target with my story and focus on the main storyline. Try not to put so much into the story all at once but to ease it all into the story from beginning to end.

I get very excited once I’ve finished a fic and ready to post. And that’s all that matters to me. As much as I would love comments and kudos it’s not the end game for me. I just want to write and get better over time and share stories that I enjoy writing and sharing with others.

Day 12 - In your own space, create your own challenge.

Well, what can I say, I love challenges but they don’t like me. I run a community that offers monthly word challenges throughout the year.

I’ve wanted to take part in more big bang challenges and reserve challenges, but the issue I face as a writer is the assigned word count.

I would love to create a challenge that must include a supernatural creature into the fic and artwork. I would love for it to be a big bang challenge without an assigned word count. Not that 20K words are hard to reach or anything, but as someone who is very anxious over word count it can be a challenge to reach. The challenge would have artist and writer sign-ups for a month, writers have 4 months to work on the fic, then have claims for a weekend, the artist will have two months to work. Pairs will then pick a date when to post at the 7th-month mark. Posting will happen from 7th month to 9th month. This will give artists time to create and writers to finalize their final draft with a beta.

Day 9 - Commit an Act of Kindness. In your own space, share what you’ve done, talk about what you’ve done.

I am a Sensei-Dai at my karate school, which means, I’m the head of all the Sensei teachers in the school. It’s a very high honor and I’m the only student in our school to hold the Dai part in teaching titles.

Knowing the material the students need to work and work on, I went up to a student that is very shy and helped work with him on a kata that he is just learning. Now, most people would say, “Aren’t you suppose to do this anyway.” Yes and no. Knowing the students helps a teacher know what would best work for a student to help them accomplish their next ranking by knowing their personality and understanding who they are as a person. This student is willing to learn and is always focused during class but gets shy and nervous when he is called to answer a question or ask for help. He was able to feel more confident in knowing the kata and practiced it a few times after class was over to work on it. He has come so far and he deserves a medal for his courage.

Day 8 - In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Dreams and Nightmares

Baby What A Big Surprise

I’m Gonna Run To You
yonkyu: (Default)
Day 7 - Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 2 might be a good place to start.)

I exactly did this a while ago. I play this video game called Splatoon and Splatoon 2. I love them very much and the interesting world they created for a human/squid. There are cats, sister squids, and other unique characters that make up this interesting world. I play as Agent 4 who goes through various tests to help save the main character from being kidnapped. You get to use ink to help you explore and take down villains. I attempted to search stories in this fandom after I attempted and wrote my own story on some characters. And I’ve read some stories about Ed from Fullmetal Alchemist. I have no clue about the show or fandom but the stories I have read, I would love to check it out.

Day 6 - In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

One: I would love a fic showing Sam and Dean getting into a big fight over Dean’s immaturity and Dean screaming, “Then you better show me how to grow up, Sammy. Cause I don’t know how to do it myself.” Sam accepts the challenge and realizes that Dean needs to know that he’s cared for and loved, something that was taken away from him. But Sam does have the help of Castiel and Jack because they walked into the room during the argument and Dean stormed off. Sam and Cas find infantilism during their research and come up with a plan to help Dean overcome his insecurities while it helps Sam and Dean reconnect and learn why they make the choices they make in the end.

Two: I would love a fic where Sam works with Jack on his psychic abilities and Jack realizes Sam has them too, together they help each other get stronger. Dean and Cas find out and Cas is on board, Dean is confused and not sure how to act and upset that they have to deal with this again. Jack senses hope and pride in Dean regarding Sam’s powers, but his worthless and self-loathing raises to levels none of the men have ever seen.

Three: I would love a fic where Harry and Draco meet up and practice Quidditch since they are both seekers. Draco asks Harry about tips and suggestions on flying and in turn, Draco helps Harry with Potions. Their secret meetups are in the room of requirements and before long their feelings for each other changes. They meet up and share many firsts during their secret meet-ups.

Day 5 - Promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

[community profile] faerie_wish13 - Is a community I run with monthly word challenges based off themes with a good size word list. All fandoms and pairings are welcome!!! The only requirement is there is a supernatural creature involved in a person’s creation. All platforms are welcome, fic, art, videos, etc. This community has gone through some changes from when it first got started. I love this community so much because others are able to share in a love for supernatural creatures.

[community profile] madrona_project - Is a community that supports those interested in original works. I enjoy this community so much because I can create my own characters and explore a world that is simple with no electricity. A community that offers challenges during the seasons and helps characters come together to share their characters unique style and personality.

[community profile] spn_bigpretzel - Is community offers daily DEW prompts every weekend. The prompts are always different and unique. They always seem to come up with amazing single word prompts weekly. Even adding pictures too!! I like this prompt because they are kind to those who post, even those that don’t post there often. They are welcoming and offer support to keep writing.

Day 4 - Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

Commented to a friend that I have not kept in touch with but keep up with their page. Need to follow up more with others that I know and branch out and make new friends.
yonkyu: (Default)
Day 3 - Share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I find this day challenging and not quite sure what to share or even say.

My favorite book is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The first time I ever heard of this book was in my Children’s Literature Class in College way back in 2003. We got to read the book for class and I fell in love with Harry, Hermione, and Ron. I was drawn to their unique friendship that blossomed throughout the book and how it was a true friend after Harry and Ron saved Hermione from a troll. I love have protective Harry and Ron where of Hermione despite their odd thoughts they had about her to start with when they met. And it made me think of the friendships I have had over the years and how some just stick for years through the good and bad always supporting each other. It was nice to see, in a different world, strangers meeting each other and becoming friends.

Day 2 - Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

The Truth In The Lie
Summary: Sam and Dean pretend to be gay lovers while they hunt a monster on a bus tour of Nova Scotia.

This was one of the first long stories I read and I have a thing for fake/pretend relationships that turn into a real relationship. It has a case, the boys solving it while falling in love without meaning too.

Always Gold
Summary: Non-hunting AU. As children, Sam and Dean lived in the shadow of their father's grief and his whiskey-fueled violent outbursts. Dean bore the brunt of it all in order to protect Sam. When evidence of the abuse is revealed, the boys are removed from their home and separated from each other. Sam is adopted and Dean is sent to a string of foster homes before they finally lose track of one another by distance and circumstance. Sam goes to Stanford to study law and Dean eventually joins the Marines. Sam tries to find Dean a few times, but when his military record seems to dead end with Dean marked MIA Sam assumes the worst. Eighteen years after they last saw each other, Sam gets a call that John has died and learns that Dean is alive and living in their old hometown of Lawrence. Dean, now a firefighter and a single dad, doesn't recognize Sam as the kid brother he once knew now after so many years apart. As their relationship becomes more entangled, Sam struggles with how to tell Dean the truth without losing him forever.

I enjoyed this story because it showed a different life for Sam and Dean. And how being separated formed their life while they were still destined to meet each other after years away from one another.

You Gotta Dance
Summary: Jared spends his last summer vacation before the beginning of law school with his parents at the Manners' Summer Camp. It doesn't take him long to get tangled up in a drama where someone's pregnant and someone else needs a new dance partner for the upcoming dance competition. Based on the movie "Dirty Dancing".

This is one of my all time favorite movies and having a J2 theme filled version hit all the right buttons. It was a very well written story with a twist and turns off the movie built in a wonderful universe that fit J2.

Day 1 - Talk about your Happy Place - the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

Not sure if I have a happy place, but I would say being in the countryside, being around nature. I enjoy listening to the birds and watching the butterflies float around. Hearing the fish and ducks splashing in the water having the time of their lives.

Though, my other happy place, that has helped keep me sane and distracted from my thoughts is playing Splatoon 2. It’s a video game on Nintendo Switch. It’s pretty much this human/squid that plays paintball. You can paint a certain place with your team of 4 players and you can even shot the opposite team members and make them start back in the starting position. Each game lasts about 3 minutes and sometimes the games feel really long, well others are very quick. I get so lost in this game with the characters, places, and different game modes you can interact with. My favorite characters are Marie and Callie.
